Chlorine dioxide, a powerful but well-known substance
Chlorine dioxide (ClO₂) is a chemical compound that has been used for water treatment and disinfection since the 1930s.
In its pure form, chlorine dioxide is a gas, but it can be dissolved in water and used as an effective disinfectant solution. Unlike traditional chlorine, chlorine dioxide works primarily through selective oxidation.
Documented tests show that FreeBact® can be up to 5 times more effective than traditional chlorine and 3 times more effective than alcohol, under the conditions studied.
Another documented benefit is its effectiveness against hard-to-combat, non-enveloped viruses. These include norovirus, which causes winter vomiting disease and is significantly more difficult to inactivate with common alcohol-based disinfectants.
Effective against microorganisms and biofilm
Chlorine dioxide works through oxidation and can damage important components in bacteria, viruses, and fungi, leading to the inactivation or death of the microorganisms.
Another important property is the ability to affect biofilm.
What is biofilm?
Biofilm is a protective coating where microorganisms can establish themselves on the inside of, for example, water pipes, tanks, and other water-carrying systems.
This coating can make bacteria harder to reach with traditional disinfection methods.
Chlorine dioxide can help break down biofilm and reduce microbial growth, making the technology particularly interesting for continuous water treatment.
The effect depends on concentration, contact time, and the conditions in the system in question.

Effective disinfection of surfaces and enclosed spaces
FreeBact® Surface includes solutions for surface disinfection, from smaller spray bottles for personal use to professional environments.
Within Surface, there is also FreeBact® Fogging, a portable system solution that distributes the disinfectant as a fine mist for comprehensive treatment of enclosed spaces.
