How long can water remain stagnant in a tank or water system?

The simple answer is that there isn't a single number of days that applies to all water.

Two tanks filled on the same day can have completely different water quality after some time, depending on temperature, water source, tank hygiene, materials, light exposure, and whether biofilm already exists in the system.

Therefore, the question is not just:

How long has the water been sitting?

But also:

Under what conditions has it been stored?

There is no universal shelf life for water in a tank or water system.

Water stored in a clean, closed, and appropriate container under good conditions has completely different prerequisites than water stored warm in a tank with biofilm or recurring contamination.

Biofilm does not necessarily have to be clearly visible.
