What is the difference between water filtration and disinfection?

It is common for the words water purification, filtration, and disinfection to be used as if they mean the same thing.

They do not.

A water filter is primarily designed to remove certain substances or particles from water.

Disinfection, on the other hand, aims to inactivate microorganisms.

This means that water can be filtered without being microbiologically safe, and disinfected water can still contain, for example, particles, sediment, or chemical substances.

Therefore, it is important to first understand what problem one is trying to solve.

Short answer, what is the difference?

The difference can be summarized as follows:

Filtration
Removes or reduces certain substances by passing water through a filter material.

Disinfection
Inactivates microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and other microbiological contaminants.

In some situations, one method is sufficient.

In others, they need to be combined.

What is filtration?

Filtration involves water passing through a material designed to capture or reduce certain types of contaminants.

The effect of the filter completely depends on the filter type, material, and pore size.

Different filters can, for example, be developed for:

  • Particles
  • Sand
  • Sediment
  • Metals
  • Organic substances
  • Odor
  • Taste
  • Certain chemical substances
  • Certain microorganisms

So, there is no general "water filter" that automatically removes everything.

What is mechanical filtration?

Mechanical filtration involves physically capturing particles.

This can, for example, include:

  • Sand
  • Rust particles
  • Sediment
  • Dirt
  • Other visible particles
  • The smaller the pores of the filter, the smaller the particles it can normally capture.

But a filter that removes visible dirt is not automatically a filter that stops microorganisms.

What is activated carbon?

Activated carbon is often used in water filters.

The material has a very large surface area and can bind certain substances through adsorption.

Activated carbon is used, among other things, to reduce:

  • Odor
  • Taste
  • Certain organic substances
  • Certain chemical compounds
  • It is important to understand that activated carbon does not automatically mean disinfection.

Furthermore, an activated carbon filter that is not properly maintained can itself become a surface where microorganisms establish themselves.

Can a filter remove bacteria?

Some filters can.

But it depends on the filter.

To physically stop bacteria, sufficiently small pores and a system designed specifically for microbiological filtration are required.

A simple sediment filter or standard carbon filter should therefore not be considered a complete microbiological protection.

One always needs to check what the manufacturer actually states the filter is designed and verified for.

Can a filter remove viruses?

Viruses are significantly smaller than many bacteria.

This means that filters that effectively reduce particles or bacteria do not automatically stop viruses.

Here too, the effect completely depends on the filter technology.

It is therefore incorrect to conclude:

"The water has passed through a filter, therefore it is safe to drink."

The filter type must correspond to the risk present.

What is water disinfection?

Disinfection means that microorganisms are inactivated so that they can no longer cause the same microbiological risk.

Methods can include, for example:

  • Chemical disinfection
  • UV treatment
  • Heat
  • Other validated disinfection methods
  • Different techniques have different advantages and limitations.

The choice depends on, among other things, water quality, water volume, microbiological load, and area of use.

What is chemical disinfection?

In chemical disinfection, a substance is added in a controlled concentration.

This can, for example, be chlorine-based substances or chlorine dioxide.

For the treatment to work, several factors need to be correct:

  • Dosing
  • Contact time
  • Water quality
  • Temperature
  • pH, depending on the method
  • Amount of organic material

So, it's not just which substance is used that determines the result.

What does chlorine dioxide do?

Chlorine dioxide, ClO₂, is used as an oxidant for disinfection and microbiological control.

It functions chemically differently from traditional chlorination and is used in several types of water systems.

Chlorine dioxide can be relevant when one wants to treat microorganisms in water and, in some systems, also work with biofilm.

What does UV treatment do?

UV treatment uses ultraviolet light to inactivate microorganisms.

For the technology to work, the light needs to reach the microorganisms.

Turbid water, particles, or deposits can therefore affect the efficacy.

This means that UV often works best when the water already has good physical quality.

UV also normally leaves no residual disinfection effect in the system after the treatment point.

Can one filter first and then disinfect?

Yes.

It is often a logical treatment order.

If the water contains many particles, an initial filtration can improve the conditions for subsequent disinfection.

A simplified flow can look like this:

Step 1: Remove particles

Step 2: Disinfect the water

Step 3: Protect or control the system if needed

Which steps are needed depends on the initial water quality.

Why can dirty water be more difficult to disinfect?

Particles and organic matter can affect treatment in several ways.

Microorganisms can be protected by particles.

Chemical disinfectants can be consumed in reactions with other substances.

UV light can be blocked or scattered.

It is therefore important not to just look at the microbiological risk.

The physical and chemical quality of the water also affects the treatment result.

Is an outdoor filter sufficient in nature?

It depends on the filter and the water source.

An outdoor filter can be very effective at removing, for example, particles and certain microorganisms.

But not all filters have the same capacity.

When using natural water, one therefore needs to know:

  • What the filter removes
  • What pore size it has
  • If it is intended for bacteria
  • If it is intended for viruses
  • If chemical contaminants may be present
  • How the filter should be maintained

It is incorrect to assume that all natural filters provide the same protection.

Is clear water safe water?

No.

Clear water can contain microorganisms.

It can also contain dissolved chemical substances that are not visible.

Similarly, turbid water can sometimes have a microbiological quality that differs from what the eye suggests.

Appearance is therefore only one of many indicators.

What is microbiological contamination?

Microbiological contamination means that water contains microorganisms that can affect hygiene or health.

This can include, for example:

  • Bacteria
  • Viruses
  • Protozoa
  • Other microorganisms

Which treatment is needed depends on the type of microbiological risk present.

What is chemical contamination?

Chemical contamination means that the water contains undesirable chemical substances.

This can include, for example:

  • Metals
  • Fuel residues
  • Pesticides
  • Solvents
  • Other chemicals

Disinfection is not designed to solve all chemical contaminations.

If water is suspected of being chemically contaminated, the correct analysis and treatment method must be chosen.

Can boiling replace filtration?

Not always.

Boiling can be used for microbiological treatment, but it does not automatically remove:

  • Sand
  • Sediment
  • Metals
  • All chemical substances
  • Turbidity

Very dirty water may therefore need to be pre-treated even if it is subsequently boiled.

Can disinfection replace filtration?

Not always either.

Disinfection inactivates microorganisms but does not automatically remove particles or dissolved substances.

It is therefore better to think in terms of treatment goals:

  • What is in the water?
  • What needs to be removed?
  • What needs to be inactivated?

Only then is the technique chosen.

What happens with biofilm?

Biofilm adheres to surfaces in water systems and consists of microorganisms embedded in a protective structure.

A filter located at the inlet of the system does not automatically remove biofilm that is already present further down the pipes.

That is an important distinction.

A system can therefore receive good water but still have an established microbiological load on the inside.

Filters need maintenance

A filter is not a one-time solution.

When a filter collects material, the load on it increases.

Depending on the filter type, it needs to be:

  • Replaced
  • Cleaned
  • Flushed
  • Disinfected
  • Inspected

If maintenance is neglected, the filter's effectiveness can decrease.

In some cases, microorganisms can also get the opportunity to grow in the filter material.

What happens if you forget to change the filter?

The consequences depend on the system.

An overloaded filter can experience reduced flow or reduced purification efficiency.

It can also become a place where organic matter and microorganisms accumulate.

Therefore, filter replacement and maintenance should follow the manufacturer's instructions and the system's actual load.

When is filtration sufficient?

Filtration can be sufficient if the problem consists solely of what the filter is designed to remove.

For example, a sediment filter can be exactly the right solution if the sole goal is to capture particles before other equipment.

But if there is also a microbiological risk, a method that handles that risk is required.

When is disinfection needed?

Disinfection becomes relevant when the water may contain a microbiological load that needs to be controlled.

This can apply to, for example:

  • Unsafe water sources
  • Emergency water supplies
  • Water from nature
  • Well water with microbiological problems
  • Technical water systems
  • Tanks
  • Larger distribution systems

The exact treatment depends on the situation.

When do filtration and disinfection need to be combined?

The combination can be particularly relevant when the water contains both particles and microbiological contaminants.

An example is natural water after heavy rainfall.

The water can then contain:

  • Sediment
  • Organic matter
  • Microorganisms

In such a case, filtration can first reduce particles, and then a suitable disinfection method can be used.
